Clayton
County Court House-Elkader
The Clayton County Courthouse, built in 1867-68, is an example of
"Italianate" style architecture. The light red brick structure rests on a
foundation of limestone blocks quarried five blocks away. An addition in
1877-78 and the construction of the clock tower in 1896 completed the
existing building. The timepiece in the clock tower is hand wound twice a
week and keeps excellent time. A monument on the front lawn stands in honor
of Civil War soldiers and sailors. While the courthouse has been in use for
over 100 years its records date from May 1838, eight years before Iowa's
statehood. The State Preservation Program nominated the courthouse for
inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in January 1976.
Davis House-Elkader
Timothy Davis built this home between 1845-1850.
The brick structure has walls eighteen inches thick, six fireplaces and
sweet pine trim which Mr. Davis imported to finish off the interior. In 1960
it was purchased by William J. Witt and remodeled for a funeral home. It is
now the Leonard Funeral Home. In April 1976, the State Preservation Program
nominated this landmark home to the National Register of Historic Places.
Stemmer
House-Elkader
White ornamental woodwork in the Victorian gingerbread style adorns this red
brick house. It was built in 1889 by J.C. Stemmer who obtained the brick
from Lee's Brick Yard which was located a few miles from Elkader. The
property remained in the Stemmer family until 1920.
The exterior and interior appear much the same as when the house was built,
with a few alterations to make it more acceptable for modern living. The
woodwork is oak with some pine. There is wainscoting in the dining room and
kitchen and grille work over a bay window and on the staircase leading to
the upper floors. Other interesting features are the numerous twelve inch
stained glass window panels in the sitting room, dining room and on the wall
by the stairs. Similar windows are mounted over the double front door.(taken
from "Old Elkader Facts and Food")
In January 1976 the State Preservation Program nominated this home to the
National Register of Historic Places.
Keystone
Bridge-Elkader
The keystone bridge is known as the longest of its type west of the
Mississippi river. It is 346 feet long and was built of locally quarried
limestone in 1889. Construction of the bridge lasted nine months at a cost
of $16,282. In later years a sidewalk was added to the north side of the
bridge. The State Preservation Program nominated this bridge to the National
Register of Historic Places in January, 1976.
St. Joseph’s Church-Elkader
Few people driving past the St. Joseph's Church grounds realize that they
are looking at two churches, separated by only a few feet. The stone
building parallel to First Street, which now serves as the parish hall, was
the first Catholic church built in Elkader.
In January 1976 the State Preservation Program
nominated this church to the National Register of Historic Places.

Carter House Museum-Elkader
The Carter House Museum, a National Register Historic Site, gives visitors a
glimpse into the lives of Iowan's of 150 years ago. Built in the 1850's as a
"mirror" or double house for the Carter brothers and their families, it is a
neoclassic structure of 18 rooms displaying furniture, clothing, and
artifacts from the 19th century. An adjoining annex contains military
uniforms from the Civil War to modern times as well as tools and farm
equipment from before the rise of the machine.
The museum is open and guided tours are offered Saturdays, Sundays, and
holidays from 1-4 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day and at other times by
request (563-245-3450). Special events at the museum include a lavish
Christmas open-house, an annual appraisal of antiques open to the public,
and learning activities for children.
The Carter House Museum is located at the corner of Bridge and High Streets,
across from the Clayton County Courthouse.
Guttenberg Haus-Guttenberg
222 South River Park Drive,
Albertus
Building
Built by Mr. and Mrs. Albertus in the early 1850's.
Man and wife did the entire construction alone on this three-story structure
and after completion they covered the rocks in the front of their home with
plaster to resemble marble, hence the building's nickname, "Marble Front."
Later known as "Gutenberg Haus."
Built above a large double vaulted cellar, for
commercial use. Now apartments.
Winkler Stone House-Guttenberg
